Our last Yard update ended with “What to do to create a visual barrier at the back end of the property” After I cleared the dead wood between the deck and the back of the property, there was a clear line of sight from the deck into Mike and CIndi’s back yard.

At first I tried a very organic “limb pile” woven loosely, but the first 20mph wind we had toppled it. So, after some research, thought I try my had at “waddling”… weaving the saplings.

Here’s what I came up with:

It is about 8 ft high and 50 ft long. Most of it on Mike & Cindi’s property… with their permission.

A bit of history.  If you remember, most of the back and side yards were severely overgrown and full of dead limbs and dead saplings. It looked a lot like this:

As you may remember, I began by clearing the central area of the back yard and put the limbs and such thru my chipper.  Now that area looks like this:

Made a mound of wood chips.  Then I cleared the trail that begins at the driveway, put down wood chips and added an arch.

A short way down the trail, there is a great cedar that was full of low dead limbs. I cleaned them up, made the arch from some of the limbs.

The deer now use this path under the tree to get to Darlene’s yard. On the other side of the trail from the tree I put up another visual “fence” to block the view of the neighbor’s blue tarp. It makes the view up the trail from the street look better:

Not far beyond this point the trail was blocked by dead fall alders. I cleared the trail, put down wood chips and lined the trail with logs.

And this brings us back to the “fence” at the back of the property.

Now the other side of the property is all forest and was just as heavily loaded with dead saplings. I cleared that side as well. That’s were most of the material came from to make the “fence”.  To get to the area I’m talking about, imagine stepping off the left side of the deck. There is a trail there that goes into the woods, but when you were here, there was no way to walk thru there.  This is how it looks now:

It is now possible to walk thru the woods from the deck all the way to the back of the property. The deer now hang out here and sometimes bed down in this area.

So that was my winter project.  I’ll have more on my Spring projects in the front yard later.
